Roof Care for 2023

Is it time for a new roof? Experts say that a new roof is expected to last up to 30 years, with proper care. So, how do you maintain and preserve your roof in 2023? Here are a few roofing care guidelines:

Inspect your Roof

You should have your roof professionally inspected, at least once a year, to identify issues and resolve them. Property owners can also keep a watchful eye on their roof to detect potential problems, not by getting up on the roof themselves, but simply with a pair of binoculars. Some things to look for include:

  • Curling, damaged, or missing shingles.
  • Pools or puddles of water.
  • Discoloration, like black spots, signs of mold.
  • Stains on interior or exterior walls, ceilings, or attic.

If you notice any of these signs, or if you have questions regarding roof replacement, reach out to a qualified roofing contractor at TEO Construction.

Clear the Gutters

When was the last time you had your gutters cleared and cleaned? If gutters accumulate debris, dirt, and leaves, they block the passage of water, often sending it down the edge of the roof and side of the building. Over time, this fosters the growth of mold and can compromise the integrity of your structure.

Trim the Foliage

Make sure to cut back and trim any branches or shrubs that are near your roof. The safest approach is to hire a professional landscaper or tree trimming company- but if you choose to do it yourself, be careful!

Check the Flashing

How is your flashing? The flashing is the strip that seals and secures roofing materials together. When the flashing becomes shoddy, water can find its way under the roof, causing damage and deterioration. If the flashing cracks, breaks, bends, or rusts, it needs to be restored quickly.

Remove any Ice

When it becomes colder, keep an eye out for ice along your roof’s edge. Ice dams occur when melted snow drips from the edge of the roof- and then freezes. Don’t risk damage to your property; have the ice removed right away.
